 Battlecruisers were employed as far back as the Guild Wars when, prior to the development of the starfighter (specifically designed to combat capital ships), most space engagements were fought between capital ships and medium gunships. Despite this development, battlecruisers are still widely used. Many terran generals use battlecruisers as their command centers during long space campaigns.
