Za'gara, a brood mother

Brood mothers are powerful, intelligent queens.[1] They were tasked by the Queen of Blades to guard and lead various zerg broods[2] and in the case of the

History

Brood mothers fill a role similar to the former cerebrates. The cerebrates were tainted by their ties to the Overmind in Kerrigan's mind so she instead created unique queens with personality and intelligence,[2] creating them just before the Battle of Char.[3] and character traits such as ambition, independence and initiative.[3] These queens were imprinted with overriding directives to be strong and evolve, and believe that the strongest are meant to rule. As the Kerrigan was the undisputed ruler of the Swarm, she was seen as the strongest and thus, the chain of command was maintained.[2] Still, brood mothers are more independent, stronger and more evolved than cerebrates ever were. Also, unlike the cerebrates, the brood mothers' survival is not dependent on their creator.[4]

If the brood mothers have a fault however, it's that they're too independent.[4] When her control over the Swarm was broken at Char at the height of the war, the brood mothers took their broods away to hide in the Koprulu Sector, still following their instructions. The brood mothers would no longer follow Kerrigan, as they felt she was weak.[2] However, no single brood mother had the psionic capacity to fully unite the Swarm and as long as they refused to recognize Kerrigan, the Swarm would remain divided.[5] The brood mothers pitted their broods against each other and/or disapeared, each competing for leadership of the Swarm.[3]

Kerrigan began tracking them down and proving her strength against them.[2]
