Game Unit
Dark Templar are represented as permanently cloaked infantry with extremely powerful attacks. They are generally not as tough as Zealots, however.
StarCraft
- Main article: Dark Templar (Hero)
Dark Templar could not be created in StarCraft. They were given to players as special units at the start of two Protoss campaign missions. They had slightly different stats from the Brood War version, and could not create Dark Archons.
Brood War
In Brood War, Dark Templar were buildable units (statistics apply to Brood War units).
Dark Templar used powerful Warp Blades, based on modified Psi-blade technology.[1]
Dark Templar are permanently cloaked, like Observers, and their effectiveness is heavily dependent on it. If the enemy has adequate detection capabilities it is more efficient to attack with predominantly Zealots. Although Zealots deal significantly less damage, they are more likely to survive the charge and last long enough to make a difference.
The single-blade design was originally intended for Zeratul's character only, but due to time constraints, the same unit design was used for all Dark Templar.[2]
Abilities
- Summon Dark Archon
- Brood War only
- Starting ability
- Sacrifices two Dark Templar to form a Dark Archon.
Upgrades
StarCraft: Ghost
There is evidence to suggest that the Dark Templar were set to appear in StarCraft: Ghost. Although most artwork likely relates to the character of Zangakkar, there is enough variation to suggest a variety of Dark Templar.

The Dark Templar appears in StarCraft II. It retains its permanent cloaking.
Dark Templar are created from a Gateway and require a Dark Obelisk before they can be warped.[4][5]
Appearance
In order to make the Dark Templar differentiate in appearance from Zealots, Samwise Didier gave Dark Templar different weapons (a bladed staff weapon) and armor covered with Zerg bones.[2]
Blizzard Entertainment is planning a community event about the dark templar model in order to get feedback.[6]
Abilities
Two Dark Templar, or one Dark Templar and one High Templar could combine to form a Twilight Archon.[7] However, the Twilight Archon has since been removed and replaced with the standard Archon.[8]
