A battlecruiser using a defensive matrix

The defensive matrix is a form of terran energy shield technology.

Overview[]

By 2499, Confederate scientists had developed a short-lived defensive matrix that could be created by science vessels.[1] The technology gained a favorable reputation during the Brood War, where matrix technology was credited for saving many lives.[2]

By 2504, LarsCorp Technologies had developed a defensive matrix system for Minotaur-class battlecruisers.[2] Defensive matrix technology was also outfitted on the Gorgon-class battlecruiser, the Bucephalus.[3]

Harvesters are equipped with defensive matrix technology. However, they are only capable of using the technology on themselves, and these shields only last a few seconds.[4]

In StarCraft, the science vessel can project a defensive matrix onto other units.

Defensive matrix

The Defensive Matrix absorbs 250 points of damage from all damage type. The shield is not perfect; some damage will "leak" and reduce the unit's HP by 0.5 per hit.

Matrixes count as having priority over shields, so health will appear to go down first on Protoss units.

Successive casts on the same unit do not stack, but replace any old Matrix with the new one.

In StarCraft II, defensive matrix is a Wings of Liberty campaign upgrade for the battlecruiser.[2]

Defense Matrix

The battlecruiser produces a shield which absorbs 200 damage. The ability is not smartcast.

The defensive matrix is a temporary deflection field that helped save countless assets from a premature death during the original Brood War. Now the minds at LarsCorp have adapted this technological marvel to protect the massive hull of the Minotaur-class battlecruiser.

In "Mist Opportunities," harvesters can temporarily protect themselves with a defensive matrix.

Swann upgrades

Science vessels can use the Defensive Matrix ability. Targeted friendly unit gains a shield that absorbs 200 damage before falling.

  • H.U.G.S. Overload grants a shield that absorbs 60 damage for 45 seconds.
  • J.U.I.C.E. Overload regenerates 60 Egonergy and energy over 45 seconds.

Development[]

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II which is no longer valid.

The nomad used to be able to create a defensive matrix (at BlizzCon 2007). The nomad could create a damage suppression field which reduces all incoming damage by 50% at the target area.[5]

One model of the battlecruiser could protect itself with a defensive matrix in earlier builds.
