The "Old Families", the descendants of the commanders of the Nagglfar,[1] were a powerful body within the Confederate power structure. Famous Old Families included the Calabas and Kusinis families, along with the Dukes (of which Edmund Duke was a member),[2] Terras and Tygores.[3] They are distinguished by their accent (a drawl).[1]
The Old Families maintained businesses and had representation on multiple worlds. They were largely immune to all but the most important laws and knew the secrets of the Confederate Council. Many members of the Old Families married members of other families in order to forge a stronger genetic and financial union. As these weren't love matches, both parents generally had mistresses and "jigs" and offspring were produced through artificial insemination. Gender roles were strictly split; for instance, the wife would be the "head of the household" while the husband would be in charge of security.[3]
The Old Families were largely wiped out by the destruction of Tarsonis.

[edit] Terra Family
[edit] Members
- Constantino Terra
- Main article: Constantino Terra
- Annabella "Bella" Terra
- Main article: Annabella Terra
- Clara Terra
- Zebediah "Zeb" Terra
- Nova's older brother. He hated his name and didn't like the fact that Nova was taller than him. He could match wits with his father on business matters but was incapable of eating without talking, not to mention being seemingly incapable of looking formal. He was set to inherit the Terra fortune. When Nova was to be sent away to Tyrador IX, Zebediah remained behind to learn more about the family business.
[edit] Servants
- Eleftheria
- Constantino Terra's mistress, was was almost the complete opposite of Annabella Terra, both socially and physically, being described as a tall, slim, willowly redhead with pale skin. Eleftheria was so nice she could get along with Annabella Terra; it was rare for mistresses and wives to get along in Old Families (despite the lack of love matches). Nova saw Eleftheria as a second mother.
- Edward Peters
- Edward Peters was the jig to Annabella Terra.
- Mr. Sim
- The kitchen staff supervisor
- Boris
- A waiter.
- Derek
- Died in Nova's psionic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper.
- Dorris
- Wondered why Marco, a fellow servant, never talked to her. Died via Nova's psionic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper.
- Maia
- One of the servants who died via Nova's psionic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper, wondering if dying would hurt in her final moments.
- Marco
- Was secretly in love with Dorris, but couldn't bring himself to tell her. Died via Nova's psychic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper, wishing that he'd actually confessed his feelings.
- Natale
- One of the servants who died via Nova's psionic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper, hating the fact that he'd never see his mother again in his final moments.
- Rebeka
- The family's hairdresser. She owned a Siamese cat named Pip which November Terra was quite taken with. Died in Nova's psionic outburst in the Terra Skyscraper.
- Walter
- Probably not the most loyal servant, considering that he enjoyed watching Gustavo McBain kill the Terra family. Killed via Nova's psionic outburst.
- Yvonne
- Died in Nova's psionic outburst, reflecting that she hadn't finished cleaning Anabella Terra's study in her final moments.
[edit] Tygore Family
- Main article: Emmett Tygore
