"He was just a fan of StarCraft, and every time we would come out with a concept for something, he would release fan art of it that just blew ours out of the water. We saw the passion that he had for StarCraft and we said 'We need to get this guy on our team.' Now he's working on the team and it's a perfect fit. You have a guy who's a fan of our artwork, and he draws like nobody else. It's a Cinderella story."

Luke "Mr-Jack" Mancini is an artist hired by Blizzard Entertainment for concept art.[1][2] He is also a member of the Sons of the Storm.[3]

Biography[]

Pre-Blizzard[]

Mancini grew up in rural Australia. He was introduced to the StarCraft universe when he received a demo disc of the original game with a computer magazine he subscribed to. It included a map editor and three missions not in the original game. He played the missions over and over, and read the game manual, taking notework of the artwork within. He loved the game so much that he convinced his teacher to let the students install StarCraft in the science lab's eight computers. They played the game during lunch break, and had LAN parties.[4]

Mancini studied at Monash University in Melbourne. He studied design, but drew videogame fanart in his spare time. Although he drew for a variety of subjects, StarCraft was his favorite setting, and he especially enjoyed drawing for the zerg.[5] At the time, it never occurred to him that he might end up working for Blizzard.[4] After the announcement of StarCraft II, he began drawing zerg, including their old StarCraft versions and the new units as they were announced.[4]

Mancini's fanart, which he posted online, caught Team 1's attention[5] (most specifically Samwise Didier),[4] and seeing that Mancini had already applied, got in contact.[5] Following a phone interview in 2009, Blizzard flew Mancini to California to meet him in person. By the time Mancini arrived back in Australia, Blizzard had already made him an offer.[4] He accepted a job offer and moved to California. He has worked there ever since.[5]

Blizzard[]

Mancini mostly works in digital media, but has also done physical art.[5] He is currently working on the StarCraft II team as a 3D/concept artist[6] This has included working on protoss art for Legacy of the Void. He has also provided art for the World of Warcraft trading card game,[5] Hearthstone, and BlizzCon poster art.[6] He also worked on Heroes of the Storm character concepts and skins.[4]
