The nydus pit, also named the nydus tunnel,[1][2][3] was a zerg structure present during the StarCraft Beta.[4][5] It was responsible for unit upgrades, a function later taken over by the evolution chamber.[6] The nydus pit was ultimately recycled into the nydus canal.[3][7]
The nydus pit's sprite was based on concept artwork of the nydus canal's interior, which served as the setting of the zerg's briefing room.[8][9][10] This sprite may have been modified into that of the sunken colony.
