The nydus worm underwent several changes during development.
First seen in 2007, it had different screams when emerging and slain.[1]
Initially, allies could could enter another player's nydus network, even from other races, but allied zerg networks could not be linked.[2][3]
The overseer could create a nydus worm after a nydus network had been produced as of October 2008.[4] This ability cost energy.[5] The overseer lost the ability to make nydus worms as of March 2009[6] and they cost 100 minerals.[7]
In June 2008, the nydus worm was built directly from the nydus network; a point on the creep was selected (it could only emerge onto the creep)[8] and the nydus worm erupted.[9] By August 2009 it was produced from the network again.[10]
The nydus worm used to be a mobile worm unit with two modes, "stationary" and "mobile". There was a delay when it shifted from one mode to another.[11] The nydus worm was visible without a detector while transporting units underground[12] and was capable of traversing gaps between space platforms.[13] It has since become a stationary structure.[14]
StarCraft II beta patch 5 increased the nydus worm's build time from 10 seconds to 20 and added a distinct scream.

Blizzard planned on allowing players to produce different kinds of nydus worms. Examples include a worm that can spew creep across several screens to create a zerg assault highway as well and a worm that attacks only enemy buildings which are used as a ground based zerg base raider.[15]
As of September 2012 these new versions have yet to appear,[16] and were eventually canceled,[17] though variant strain data does exist in the game's beta files.[18]
Legacy of the Void[]
Nydus worms were changed to be invincible when emerging. Patch 4.7.1 removed this and gave them 6 total armor while emerging. Their cost decreased from 100 minerals and gas to 50 and the time in between creep growth increased from 0.3 to 0.45.
Patch 4.8.2 increased the nydus worm's HP from 200 to 300 and decreased their armor while emerging from 6 to 5. The nydus network and nydus worm initial unload delay decreased from 0.36 to 0.18, unload period changed from 0.36 to 0.18, and load period changed from 0.18 to 0.09. The Patch 4.8.3 Balance Update decreased the nydus worm's armor while emerging to 3.
Patch 4.11 increased the nydus worm's cost to 75 minerals and gas and added a 14-second cooldown. The nydus network and nydus worm changes were also reverted.
