The Russian Federation, the largest and leading constituent of the long defunct Soviet Union, was a transcontinental nation state that existed over Eurasia.

During the 20th century, the Soviet Union embarked upon a program of space exploration, engaging in the space race with its rival, the United States. These space programs would go on to form the basis of the space program embarked upon by the United Powers League in the 23rd century-the same body that brought Russia into its fold upon its inauguration in 2229, bringing social stability but designating English as the common tongue of the planet.[1]

Despite this, legacies of Russian live on, Alexei Stukov still having knowledge of the Russian language and identifying as Russian.[2]

Even in the Koprulu sector, Russian culture lived on, with some marines painting their armor with symbols of Russia and the former Soviet Union.[3]
