Gunships are terran vessels once used in conjunction with capital ships (eg. the battlecruiser) before the development of small, dynamic high-speed fighters (eg. the Wraith). It was found that the Wraith could deal out a similar amount of damage to capital ships while evading most defensive battery attacks.^[1]

The gun cutter is a type of gunship.^[2]

Gunships were once terran units in StarCraft, in which they were referred to as "mercenary gunships." Their sprites, which bear a great deal of resemblance to the Valkyrie, can still be found in StarEdit.^[3] During the StarCraft beta, they functioned as ground attack bombers.^[4]
