Hawkes was a corporal in the Confederate Marine Corps
In late 2488, Hawkes was stationed on Turaxis II. He was a driver of a transport truck in a convoy that headed out from Boro Airbase to Firebase Zulu. However, the convoy came under attack by Kel-Morian Hellhounds, destroying two trucks and damaging a third. Not only did the damage throw the convoy into mayhem, but because the marines were replacements, there was no effective command structure bar Hawkes himself. Using the radio, he managed to get in touch with Firebase Zulu and chart a course for it. Hawkes assigned squad members and got the convoy moving again, Hawkes in the remaining truck while other marines had to walk.[1]
