The hunter is a variant strain of the baneling that appears in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.

The hunter

The hunter is able to leap up and down cliffs thus giving it mobility. It is also capable of leaping towards its targets thus reducing the damage taken from ranged targets.

Due to how the hunters jump at their targets before exploding, this can lead to an increase in cost efficiency for the banelings, as they will not waste as many explosions. However, since they also seem to prioritize targets one at a time, it can also lead to them being slightly slower at taking out the enemy if all the banelings only focus on one target at a time.

Heart of the SwarmEdit

It becomes available with the splitter after completing "Old Soldiers."[1]

During Kerrigan's resurgence, Abathur discovered the hunter strain when he exposed the banelings to extreme conditioning. The banelings were placed on the resource-rich but highly volcanic planet of Scoria where periodic surges of lava would kill them. The banelings that survived developed the ability to leap up and down cliffs.[2]

DevelopmentEdit

The following section contains information from a previous version of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm which is no longer valid.

During the development of Heart of the Swarm, the hunter was known as the gorgeling.[3]
