Usually able to keep his emotions under control, Craven was a skilled politician and businessman, but never set out to be a "man of the people." This could be said to have worked against him, meeting his match in the popular anti-Confederate senator Angus Mengsk. In 2478, unable to deal with him politically, he tried to have him murdered by a team of disguised neurally resocialized marines at the Mengsk summer home, but the plot failed.
Lennox was unable to prevent the popular Mengsk from speaking at the Close of Session speech the following year. There Mengsk humiliated him by embracing him in public and whispering that he knew Craven was behind the assault on his home.
