Biography

Mar Sara

In early December, 2499, the magistrate was placed in charge of the fringe world colony of Mar Sara. With the recent destruction of the Chau Sara colony at the hands of the protoss, the magistrate's task was to safeguard the colonists and keep their state of panic from escalating any further.[1] To this end, the magistrate underwent C&C (command and control) training, dealing with the zerg on Mar Sara's space platform and with a Sons of Korhal force on the ground as well.[2][3]

The magistrate barely had time to settle into his office when he was contacted by Edmund Duke, the commander of Alpha Squadron. The magistrate was ordered to relocate himself and the planet's core colonists to an evacuation concentration point[4] in the Wasteland. En route, he gained the assistance of Marshal Jim Raynor and the Mar Sara Colonial Militia.[5]

In effect, Mar Sara's civilian government had been replaced by Confederate martial law[4] and the zerg attack on Backwater Station did not make things any easier. Although Duke declared that Alpha Squadron would deal with the situation, Raynor maintained that the Confederates would not arrive in time to help. The magistrate sided with Raynor, sending in a force of militia to aid the marshal in his rescue operation. Overall, the mission was a success, though the apparent destruction of a "vital Confederate installation" resulted in Raynor and his men being arrested by Duke.[6]

Desperate Alliance

" I got your message, Magistrate, and frankly I don't care what you have to say about Confederate regulations. You damn fringe world yokels are all alike, don't know where your loyalties lie. Y'all have a real good day now, y'hear?"
Edmund Duke[src]

The magistrate protested to Duke about his heavy handed actions, but the Alpha Squadron CO was not having any of it. In addition, the zerg were advancing rapidly, the Confederacy's evacuation plans were coming to nothing and no source of military relief was available apart from the Sons of Korhal. Arcturus Mengsk contacted the magistrate personally, offering to evacuate the colonists. However, although many lives would be saved, any affiliation with the SOK would result in the magistrate being branded as an outlaw as well. The magistrate agreed to Mengsk's proposal and the evacuation was carried out successfully.[7]

Mengsk's predictions proved correct: the magistrate's tenure suspended pending an official investigation into his affiliation with the SOK. That hardly mattered however, as not only had the magistrate been promoted to the rank of "Commander," but Mar Sara was breathing its last breaths due to the spread of the zerg. Still, the new commander successfully supervised a raid led by a recently freed Raynor against the Jacobs Installation, recovering Confederate data.[8]

Antiga Prime

"You and Captain Raynor have done well, Commander. I believe our efforts have weakened the Confederacy's grip on the fringe worlds, but our job out here isn't done yet."
Arcturus Mengsk[src]

For better or worse, the Commander was now part of the Sons of Korhal and, almost immediately, his new affiliation was put into practice. Antiga Prime was ready to revolt against the Confederacy and with the aid of Captain Raynor and Lieutenant Sarah Kerrigan, the Commander was assigned to make sure it happened.[9] In this the SOK was successful, though once again, the zerg had to be dealt with. A long six months of bitter fighting would follow.[10]

Events came to a head when it was revealed that the data retrieved from the Jacobs Installation were designs for a psi emitter-a device that could lure the zerg into isolated locations. This same device had brought the zerg to Mar Sara. Mengsk intended to use an emitter to break a blockade enacted by Delta Squadron. The Commander moved his forces against the Confederate lines, intending to give Kerrigan the time she needed to plant the device in the Confederate camp.[11] Although his forces were repelled, the device was successfully planted and the SOK escaped as the zerg were lured to the planet en masse.[4]

Fall of the Confederacy

"Well, Commander, it looks like we're on our own. It's funny... It seems like yesterday Arcturus was the idealistic rebel crusader. Now he's the law, and we're the criminals. It kills me to know that we helped him achieve his goals of conquest."
Jim Raynor[src]

For the Commander, the Fall of Tarsonis was the beginning of something different, a sign that Mengsk was willing to do anything to achieve his goals, even using psi emitters against a densely populated planet. After sacrificing Kerrigan to the zerg at New Gettysburg, Raynor decided to abandon Mengsk, the Commander following him. Together, the two managed to destroy Tarsonis' Ion Cannon, allowing them to escape the planet.[12]

In the aftermath of the Confederacy's downfall, the Commander seemingly went his own way. When and why this occurred is unknown, but within six weeks, he had left Raynor's Raiders.[13]

Current Status

The Commander's exact current status is unknown, but has been confirmed as "dead and gone."[14]
