Mutagens were collected by Sarah Kerrigan's zerg throughout the StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm single player campaign. She could use them to purchase upgrades to specific zerg units. It is collected from various creatures in missions. Abathur directed this process at the evolution pit.
Mutagens were cut from the game, as developers felt it was too similar to the game mechanics of Wings of Liberty. A new system was developed where zerg upgraded over time, leading to an evolutionary branch a player could choose with a specific mission. Biomass effectively replaced mutagen in the new system.
