TechLab SC2 DevRend1

Early render of the tech lab

In early builds the tech lab researched upgrades and special abilities for some units, but these upgrades were transferred to merc compound, armory and fusion core. Currently the tech lab is responsible to research armor and weapon upgrades for the units.

The tech lab was mocked up as a science facility add-on but later repurposed when Blizzard decided that buildings didn't get specific add-ons, they could either get a reactor or tech lab.[1]

  • U-238 Shells[2]
    • Used to increase the marine attack range like in StarCraft I.[2] On the actual build, the marine no longer need this upgrade, the attack range is already 5 when built.[3]
  • Caduceus Reactor[2]
    • When the medic was available (now is no longer in multiplayer), this upgrade was available. Like in StarCraft I, it increased the medic's energy.[2]

  • Fighter Tech[4]

In earlier builds the viking was built at the factory in ground mode, but needed the Fighter Tech upgrade to enable it to transform to air mode.[4]

In December 2012, the ability to research Seeker Missiles for the Raven was removed; the ability is now an automatic one for the Raven.[7]

HuntSeekMiss SC2 UseAble1 Seeker Missile

The raven deploys a seeker missile that hovers for five seconds before launching at the target. Deals 100 splash damage against both ground and air unit, in a radius of 2.[8] +35 shield damage is dealt when used in Co-op Missions.[9] The splash damage can damage friendly units. The missile moves at a speed of 2.953.[10]

The missile can be avoided if the targeted unit avoids it long enough. The targeted unit is visually indicated by a red aura.

The missile cannot target buildings.

The Nomad was replaced by the Raven; it had the "Defense Matrix" ability along with another unknown ability[11] at BlizzCon 2007. The ability is no longer in the game.

Building AbilitiesEdit

Removes the structure and returns 75% of the structure's mineral and vespene gas cost. The process may not be aborted once started. A bunker cannot be salvaged while units are still in it.

  • Caduceus Reactor at tech lab, which reduces healing cost.[13][14] The enhanced healing beam will change color.[15] A fusion core is required for the upgrade.[16] The upgrade was later reverted to the Wings of Liberty version via the January 9, 2013 balance update.[13]

Legacy of the Void DevelopmentEdit

During development of Legacy of the Void, the tech lab was used to research an upgrade for cyclones that allowsed them to gain the ability to attack air units. This upgrade requiresd the presence of the fusion core.[17]

DefenderMode LotV Game1 Defender Mode

Deploys into Defender mode. In this mode, liberators have a long-ranged narrow attack that can inflict high single target damage. Liberators cannot move in this mode.

This attack only targets units, not buildings.[18]
