The 3rd Marines, a.k.a. "the Thundering Third" was a regular marine force during the Guild Wars. It was led by Colonel Javier Vanderspool, who also commanded the elite 321st Colonial Rangers Battalion. Recruits for the batallion were trained at Turaxis Prime.
During the Guild Wars, the unit was based at Fort Howe. It succeeded in repelling repelling a Kel-Morian attack, pushing the KMs out of Whitford and through the Snakeback Mountains.[1]

Gunnery Sergeant Red Murphy was involved with the battalion in its graduation ceremony, congratulating recruits.
D Company
D Company consisted of 72 marines, divided into 3 platoons, with 3 squads to each platoon. Recruit Sergeant Jim Raynor and Recruit Hank Harnack were both members of 1st squad, 2nd platoon during training.
Echo Company
Echo Company was a holding company. When he arrived at Fort Howe, then private Tychus Findlay was assigned to this unit.

Notes
In a media briefing, the Thundering Third was referred to as the Third Regiment. At some other times, it appeared to be a battalion. The source material was unclear on this point.[1]
