Vanadium is a type of metal first created by Raynor's Raiders during the Second Great War. It was produced with the results of research conducted by Hyperion scientist Egon Stetmann, who was studying protoss crystals. Stetmann discovered the crystal he was studying had a molecular structure as complex as a biological organism, which made it tough and flexible. Stetmann was able to create vanadium based on these observations. Vanadium is lightweight and diffuses weapon impacts better than traditional armor plating. This results in the forces being trained and built by the Raiders able to take more damage before being destroyed.
Wings of LibertyEdit
In the Wings of Liberty campaign, Vanadium Plating is unlocked with five protoss research points. It increases the maximum health of all units by 5% for each armor upgrade researched for them. Units previously damaged will be healed 5% if they were damaged before the upgrade.
Armor upgrades increase health of affected units by 5% per level.
We have created a new lightweight alloy called vanadium. Vanadium diffuses weapon impacts much more efficiently than traditional armor plating, and it better preserves the life of our units. Now each of the armor upgrades in the armory and engineering bay increases unit life by 5% in addition to increasing armor.
Vanadium is a real-world metal with different properties. However, in the real-world, it is also added to steel to make it significantly stronger.
