Vanadium is a type of metal utilized by terrans. It was first created by Raynor's Raiders during the Second Great War thanks to the efforts of Hyperion scientist Egon Stetmann.

Overview[]

Vanadium was first created by Raynor's Raiders during the Second Great War. It was produced with the results of research conducted by Hyperion scientist Egon Stetmann, who was studying protoss crystals. Stetmann discovered the crystal he was studying had a molecular structure as complex as a biological organism, which made it tough and flexible. Stetmann was able to create vanadium based on these observations. Vanadium is lightweight and diffuses weapon impacts better than traditional armor plating. This results in the forces being trained and built by the Raiders able to take more damage before being destroyed.[1]

Hydralisk dens of the Simulant Project were given deadly vanadium blades, though investigators were never able to find out what was their purpose or who was responsible for placing them there.[2]

Game Effect[]

Wings of Liberty[]

In the Wings of Liberty campaign, Vanadium Plating is unlocked with five protoss research points. It increases the maximum health of all units by 5% for each armor upgrade researched for them. Units previously damaged will be healed 5% if they were damaged before the upgrade.[1]

Armor upgrades increase health of affected units by 5% per level.[1]

We have created a new lightweight alloy called vanadium. Vanadium diffuses weapon impacts much more efficiently than traditional armor plating, and it better preserves the life of our units. Now each of the armor upgrades in the armory and engineering bay increases unit life by 5% in addition to increasing armor.

Campaign Acquisition
Acquired from Hyperion laboratory for 5 protoss research points

Co-op Missions[]

Vanadium plating is available as a level 10 upgrade for Jim Raynor in Co-op Missions, increasing the maximum health of all units by 10% for each armor upgrade researched for them.[3] Raynor's Backwater Marshal prestige does stack to a certain degree with this bonus (Haven't checked if the bonus is better or worse with this prestige, but it does exist).

Heroes of the Storm[]

Vanadium Plating appears as a talent for Lt. Morales in Heroes of the Storm.[4]

Notes[]

Vanadium is a real-world metal with different properties. However, in the real-world, it is also added to steel to make it significantly stronger. The "vanadium" in the game may therefore actually refer to this ferrovanadium steel.
