Shouldn't the Player be Shown as a character because the game shows it through the player being a commander, celebrate, and excututor. 02/05(i think)/07 156.3.148.222 23:30, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Agentheartlesspain-- cant find login screen

Er..., why is an article copied almost directly from Wikipedia here a featured article? -rayluT 00:24, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

All the large articles are straight from wikipedia ... and many were written by me (as Kimera757) there. PsiSeveredHead 13:57, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikia messages

The StarCraft wiki has just been added to the Wikia news box, which means this message will be shown on all Wikia sites for the next few days. I hope this brings some new users to your wiki. Now would be a good idea to create a welcome template to place on the talk page of new users. See the Harry Potter welcome for one example. Angela talk 12:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Battles

Since this wiki is supposed to be written in-universe, should we have articles on battles and such? {{SUBST:User:Bub/sig}} 16:58, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Battles should go into the appropriate storyline article. (For instance, "the Battle of Antioch" is part of the StarCraft Episode III article.) PsiSeveredHead 23:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I think they could eventually recieve their own articles...why not? They could easily be completely different articles. The Episode 3 article could contain gameplay information (walkthroughs, transcripts, etc) while the battle article could contain canon information. -ED 17:31, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Is there a way to add a logo and favicon? Would be better than the default Wikia... =/ --Xallium (talkcontribs) 22:50, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, you just need to upload images called wiki.png and favicon.ico. See Help:Improving your Wikia for more information. Angela talk 01:13, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh sweet. Wookiepedia did this, and so it looks much better. I'll start hunting for the right images. This cool site (http://media-convert.com/) can convert jpgs and stuff to other formats; I'm pretty sure it can convert jpgs or bmps to pngs or icos. PsiSeveredHead 02:36, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

This is a useful site for making favicons out of other images. Angela talk 04:12, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
I was doodling and made some candidates. Just rough drafts for your consideration... i'll make more later or something...

I like #2 and #3 anyway. I assume those would be the icon that goes in the upper-left-hand corner? PsiSeveredHead 22:29, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

D'oh... Its supposed to be Wiki not Wikia >_<... argh. Anyways, here's another random one you can like... not choose from. [4] btw, whats wrong with the zergling one!

I messed up. I assumed the first one was #1. I didn't like #2 ... it looks like a fire breathing crayon Zergling.

I like the newest one you put up, too. PsiSeveredHead 00:31, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

HEY!... Thats supposed to be marine blood! Anyway, give me suggestions and criticisms so we can actually use one... or not.
I think any of them is nice, and certainly better than the Wikia logo. -ED 17:33, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
Argh... I didn't think of the logo and how it would fit in with the site >_<... i'll make ones that fit more with the white layout cause the person who made the current logo should be shot... wait a minute... >_< --Xallium (talkcontribs) 14:35, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Proposed fanfiction policy

There's quite a bit of fanfiction on this site, and there have been a few complaints about that. I just discovered that Wowwiki deals with this issue as well, according to their policy: http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Policy/Writing/FanFiction and http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Fan_fiction_guidelines

The most important guideline from my PoV is "your fan fiction should most likely be placed under your user page, e.g. [[User:Kang the Great/My fanfic article]]". PsiSeveredHead 22:52, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

We had similar issues at Halopedia. Users just moved fanon to userpages until a Halo Fanon wiki was created, then we made them migrate all fanfics there. -ED 17:33, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
My apologies if I've been a contributor to the problem. Moving fanfic articles to userpages seems like an appropriate solution, given the trouble of supporting a separate Wiki. In fact, I've just done so with my own. -- ColonelChaos 13:57, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

FA

How is the featured article chosen? --ED(talk)(shockfront) 00:47, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

It isn't. Actually it's kind of annoying, as they stay up real long due to lack of articles; I need to replace that section with something else.

I recommend removing that section and the fanfiction section to clear up the main page. --ED(talk)(shockfront) 21:02, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

If I knew how to get rid of it, I would. However, I would need something to fill in the space. :( PsiSeveredHead 22:15, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

How about an "Improvement Drive"? then again, that might have the same problem. --ED(talk)(shockfront) 22:18, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

StarCraft II

Perhaps a mention of StarCraft II on the front page is in order? -- 172.193.98.69 11:36, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. It also let me removed the featured article. PsiSeveredHead 17:21, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

StarCraft: Ulysses

I'm curious as to why Ceptryn's addition of the StarCraft: Ulysses fan fiction was reverted from the fan fiction section of this article. Was there something wrong with it? --Chibiabos 04:41, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Ditto. Also, while we're on the subject, I'm curious about the process of linking to fanfics, as to what kind of processes one must go through before linking them --Hawki 08:12, 24 June 2007 (UTC).

ED did that, and I'm not sure why. I think it's because the fanfiction isn't actually part of this site. PsiSeveredHead 13:30, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Unnamed planets in StarCraft cinematics

There are few planets that haven't been named which appear in some StarCraft cinematics.I will post some screenshots here which will show you these planets.Do you know the names of these planets?

File:Screen66.jpeg

Science Vessel orbiting an unknown planet.

  • This planet appears in a cinematic titled Battle of the Amerigo in the original StarCraft.
File:Science Vessel 3.jpg
  • In the introduction to Brood War,we see a battle on a planet. What's the name of this planet? It appears it is one of the first worlds where UED forces appeared.

--Rethas 10:52, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

The Amerigo is orbiting Char. The second science vessel appears in the Episode I end cinematic, the planet's name unknown. However, while it's not my call, we can't really make articles for unnamed planets. --Hawki 12:49, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Adding Templates/Quotes

I've got an idea. Why don't we create a template for quotes similar to the one on starwars.wikia.com?We could then find good quotes describing characters, units, building and planets. What do you think about it? --Rethas 13:20, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I think that's a great idea. Can you do it? I wouldn't know how. PsiSeveredHead 22:08, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't know how too :P.We need to ask someone responsible for templates on this Wiki to create a template similar to the one on Wookiepedia. --Rethas 11:17, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

How to add a new template on this wiki?I tried to create a new one - quotes template by copying its code from Star Wars Wikia (just to try if it will work). But it still doesn't work - perhaps I did something wrong. Can you enlighten me?? --Rethas 17:20, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

You have to make sure the code for it is in the template namespace. That is, it should be Template:Quote and not just Quote. I've moved it there for you, should work now. --Splarka (talk) 19:31, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

It still doesn't seem to be working. There could have been a word break in the quote, though. PsiSeveredHead 22:35, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

It works!!!Hell yeah!!! XD --Rethas 09:19, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Not quite yet. There's still a few bugs, like visible "[" symbols on the Stukov page. PsiSeveredHead 22:17, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

I've fixed this bug.Now it works perfectly. We could also try the planet template from Wookiepedia to describe most of the planets :P. --Rethas 08:48, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

Can anyone take a look at the buildingbox template and quote templates?

For the first, it has no borders, and on pages with lots of subsections the template looks "cut up". Take a look at the Fleet Beacon page to see what I mean.

Second, some of the quotes don't need to be referenced (eg a Firebat's unit quote) but the template adds an "unsourced quote" line if the quote cannot be referenced. I think this needs fixing, too. (For that matter, referencing things like Tychus Findlay's "Hell. It's about time." quote on the top of the StarCraft II page is very difficult, as the reference would be a website link rather than a page at this wiki. I think that needs fixing as well. PsiSeveredHead 21:46, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Main Page update needed

I think the main page is looking a bit plain compared to the main pages of other video game sites. Does anyone have any ideas of how to spruce it up? PsiSeveredHead 21:11, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Partly based on what I've seen from other sites, here are a few ideas;

-Rotate the feature article.

-Quote feature: Some sites use a weekly quote from the game, usually from one or more of its characters.

-A "did you know...?" section could work. This portrays relatively obscure facts for the media in question, things that would be hard to find on non-wiki sites. Info from the novels, maps of the month, etc. would be good choices. Perhaps rotated.

-Featured Image: Rotated on a weekly basis.

Other things could benefit the main page too I guess. The fan fiction section could probably be removed and links to other products posted (eg. the rest of the game series, StarCraft Adventures, etc.)--Hawki 22:53, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Wake up Wiki! I meant in new edits, modifications, unit counters, unit requirements and replacements for old building and units. Come on people, people now. Lets be people now. We all got to edit this.(Reference from nowhere)

  • Unit Replacements:Wraiths are replaced by Vikings "Transform and roll out" reference from Transformers
  • Unit Counters:Battlecruiser is weak to way too many enemies en mass
  • Unit Requirements:Battlecruiser needs Deep Space Relays and anything that makes air units
  • Structure Replacements and retirements:Tech Labs replaced most old Terran structures
  • Structure Requirements:Star Base requires a starport

A Galaxy in Chaos

In the distant future a small group of human exiles have been doomed to fight for survival on the edge of the galaxy. Through military strength, espionage and deceit, a unified Terran government has maintained an uneasy peace. As resources run short, however, these Confederate nations find themselves looking towards the rich worlds of their alien neighbors, the enigmatic Protoss. To further complicate matters, it seems that a previously unknown and deadly species known only as the Zerg has entered Protoss space and is destroying everything in its path. The time for war has come... (http://www.blizzard.com/starcraft/)

Does anyone know how the Featured Article section was created? It's too complicated for me to change (and these articles need to be rotated sometimes). PsiSeveredHead 04:34, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

If you edit this section, you should be able to change the text starting from the StarCraft Episode 0 link (just ignore the part above that which affects the style. Angela (talk) 08:09, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Spoilers

What exactly is the criteria for using a spoiler warning? They seem to be employed mostly at random; some are even used when describing events that were detailed in the instruction manual! Personally, I don't think anything can really be called a spoiler anymore, given that the game's been out for almost ten years, but what does everyone else think? - Dark T Zeratul 03:28, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

There's nearly three hundred articles, and I haven't gone through them all. Despite all the edits, I don't actually spend much time on the wiki. There are still articles with broken red links too.

On another note, sometimes you'll get an article that looks like this:

  • Prequel (spoiler)
  • Material from the manual
  • Material from the game (spoiler)

It's a bit difficult to avoid "spoilerizing" the manual's material at that point. At least for the articles I've written, anything not from the manuals (or from the back of a novel) gets the spoiler tag. PsiSeveredHead 04:26, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

The problem is, given that the material from the manual actually makes up a minority of the information about characters and events, doing it that way would require spoiler-tagging virtually everything. And, as I said, the game's been out for almost ten years. I very much doubt that anyone interested in this page would have not yet played it. - Dark T Zeratul 05:35, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
I suggest the general disclaimer say that Starcraft Wiki contains spoilers. That way, users are warned that the Wiki aims to be as comprehensive as possible, and that they should be careful of what they click if they do not want things spoiled. -ED 02:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Does anybody else think that the spoiler alert should be more prominent and have a border like in Wikipedia so that it'll be more clearly and visible?
I recommend we move the spoiler warning to a General disclaimer or something like that, and then add it to the welcome template. That way, users know that all of Starcraft Wiki contains spoilers and we don't have to put spoiler warnings everywhere. -ED 17:35, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

WoWWiki and more

Hello! I am Kirkburn, and I help out Wikia with their gaming wikis. In addition I am a lead admin of WoWWiki.

I would love to see more closer work between the Blizzard wikis. You may not know, but there is a good little selection of Blizz-related wikis on Wikia now. For example blizzard.wikia.com and diablo.wikia.com plus a whole lot more linked on the Blizzard wiki. I have been suggesting a few things to Wikia to try and improve the networking between the two, but I thought I'd start it off by mentioning them here :)

Meanwhile, personally, I think this site would work really well with a dark colour scheme, in keeping with SC - has this ever been a thought?

Anyway, I think you havea great site and a good MP design. Simple is good :) Thanks for your time! Kirkburn (talk) 08:17, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Um, not my place to make judgement, but I find myself agreeing with the darker colour scheme. We all know about StarCraft's gritty underbelly ;) --Hawki 13:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Terran Artillery Unit

What is this Terran unit which appears in the cutscene in the middle of the Protoss campaign, called The Ambush?

Rethas 16:11, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Whatever it is, it certainly isn't a Siege Tank. Unfortunatly, it's never been expanded upon and was probably the result of the cinematic team taking artistic licence. At the best, if a screenshot can be obtained, it could go in a sub-section of the Siege Tank page.--Hawki 20:58, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

This was posted so long ago, so there's no source :( but Blizzard said it wasn't a standard unit. (Neither is the jeep Sarge and Lester were driving in.) Unlike StarCraft I, StarCraft II will let you make NPC units if/when you need them. PsiSeveredHead 23:43, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

I know this is not the Siege Tank. But OK,nevermind. Anyway, what's this "container" used in Amerigo and Inauguration cinematics? --Rethas 17:03, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't recall any such container in The Inaguration but the explosive on the Amerigo is a cold fusion nuke.--Hawki 21:02, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Err,I don't mean the nuke, but these floating boxes used to carry troopers. One was used to bring the demolition team onboard the Amerigo. --Rethas 07:50, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm guessing it's a ship designed to shuttle over personel and supplies in a fleet. Can't really name it though, as it's not a Dropship and its too smalll for a shuttle.--Hawki 22:22, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Wasn't that jeep a Stinger, shown in Ghost? I believe it fits the description, albeit in a purely recon role without an obvious weapon placement. Pix 22:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

It may have led to the idea of a Stinger, but Stingers have six wheels, and that jeep only had four. It couldn't have been a Stinger. PsiSeveredHead 23:13, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

The logo...

It's my personal view, but don't you think that logo isn't really suitable for StarCraft wikia? I'd understand if it were the eye of Overmind, but a Zergling... I don't like the present logo. Can't it be changed? StarShade 16:16, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

It was a quick pick before BlizzCon. PsiSeveredHead 23:10, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Main Page design

Hullo! I'm Kirkburn, a Wikia Gaming Helper, and I have a few suggestions to make regarding the Main Page. You may be interested in stealing some code from w:c:starter which is the current new wiki base design. It makes content a bit easier to add and is easily expanded. Keep up the great work! Kirkburn (talk) 22:35, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Main Page width

In the interests of preventing an admin edit war, I'm going to leave it open to discussion as to whether the main page should be stacked or spread out. I'm personally inclined to the latter, as it's far easier to read and the links are more horizontally orientated rather than bunched up in narrow columns. Still, that's just one opinion out of many.--Hawki 22:10, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

During the March Zerg Rush event, my internet connection died and I edited the wiki from an internet cafe using IE. The main page looked very vertical. It's possible the main page just looks different to each of us. Kimera 757 (talk) 22:19, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Doesn't seem that way. The last edit I made on the main page had it extended out. After Meco edited it, it was stacked. Check the recent page history and you can see the difference.--Hawki 22:24, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I just checked the difference out with Internet Explorer, and there it's ... huge. It seems the browser is more important than the computer itself. I have to agree with Hawki, the new design is too tall/narrow in Internet Explorer. (It still looks identical in Firefox, though.) Hawki, are you using IE? How about you Meco? Kimera 757 (talk) 00:25, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Over here I'm on Iceweasel 3.0b5 (Debian-derivative of Firefox). I'll fire up my Windows-partition and fiddle around with it. Hopefully it can be fixed to IE7. Meco 01:29, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Debian ... okay, you're clearly the computer expert.

Anyway, I just checked the Main Page on IE and it looks fine now. Kimera 757 (talk) 01:50, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I've managed to get the user area and the recent edits area to be stacked on top of each other and to look the same in IE7 and FF2. The borders are currently missing in action and at the moment I'm not sure where to add the necessary code to get them to work. On the other hand, cellpadding didn't work particularly well before so now there's no text pushed right up against the border lines. Meco 02:28, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I use Internet Explorer. At this point in time, it has good width. However, not being a techie, I can't comment on any technical issues :(--Hawki 03:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

To whom it may concern

Hello, I'm Atarumaster88, an administrator over at Wookieepedia. I've been to your site before and enjoyed reading some of the articles, so I thought I would pass this on regarding Wikia's latest decision in case you weren't aware.

We've already had a big discussion about this over on Wookieepedia and there's ongoing brouhaha on it at the central Wikia, but everyone should be aware of some important changes Wikia is planning on making, with or without your approval. See this [6] for more details, also a Wookieepedia thread.

If there are staff/Janitors that spot any errors in my statement, please correct them and let me know. ;-)

Sound off on it, please don't A) Flame the staff. It might be amusing, but it's probably not and it accomplishes nothing. B) Make empty threats. Consider the bluff called. C) Misinterpret the issue. Read before you click that edit tab. And then read again and look at it from both sides. Atarumaster88 (Talk page) 15:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

On a related note, Meco is redesigning the front page to meet the new skin at User:Meco/Main Page Test. Kimera 757 (talk) 14:35, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

New design

Fantastic work on the new main page design! We really appreciate your work. My only note is that the text is rather small. Kirkburn (talk) 10:17, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

The ads are also pushing the right-side sections out of alignment. We should put a top secton above the left and right columns to fix that problem. Kimera 757 (talk) 11:46, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Minor suggestion; may only be a Firefox problem. The "universe" section is much narrower than the above sections. Also, the activity section is being pushed into the news section (overlapping it). Kimera 757 (talk) 23:05, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Looks okay here on Firefox 3 - got a screenshot? Putting anything above the main page tags is not really an option at the moment, unfortunately. Kirkburn (talk) 11:35, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Hungarian SC Wiki

Hi! The Hungarian (Magyar) StarCraft Wikia (here) started a few days ago, you should put a link to the relevant section. Thanks! Quisczicza 20:29, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Where's the main page?

I don't see it for some reason... capefeather 18:31, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

It's a problem that seems to be affecting other wikis as well. Probably some sort of server hiccup or maintenance in progress. The page code is still intact so things should come back up automatically when they're done. Since there's nothing we can do, don't worry about it. Meco 18:37, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Editing the wiki's Main Page seems to do the trick. capefeather 19:37, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Fanfiction box code

Template:MainBox2

The background should be white, not blue, IMO. :( PSH aka Kimera 757 (talk) 20:06, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

The Official Fiction

Don't get me wrong; I LOVE the new design for the wiki, but I think it would be a good idea to have a link to the Official Fiction section like the old layout did. It just seems like an important section that is worth mentioning, considering all of the additions to the lore of the StarCraft Universe for the last 7 years (approximately) have come from the various books, graphics novels, etc. Just a thought. --Thebrowncloud 01:32, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

I just noticed we don't have a place for the lore, either. Huh... PSH aka Kimera 757 (talk) 01:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

While looking at a few other wikis, I noticed that some had Special:AllPages, Special: Categories or Special: CategoryTree somewhere on the main page. The small number of links makes it hard to fit all that info on the first page, though. Maybe we need a lore page (sort of like the characters page), a one-stop link which we could put on the front page. Adding only one link will hopefully not cause much damage. (Incidentally, I believe the books can be found in the StarCraft universe link, but that's probably not easy to search.) PSH aka Kimera 757 (talk) 17:06, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

As a stopgap measure, I've added a categories link page to the main page. Need to do more work on this... PSH aka Kimera 757 (talk) 21:03, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

A lore portal should probably have the following links:

Overview (link to StarCraft universe)
Races lore
StarCraft storyline (same order as the template, I guess, with events category and episode links)
Bonus missions (Uprising, Enslavers I and II, Stukov) Timeline
Characters
Books and comics
Canon policy
Locations, organizations, and other such categories.
